Lights go out, but scooter does not disable

I have a 10 inch wheel self balancing scooter, distributed by Koolwheel. Recently when I step off one of the peddles, it does not disable the motor on that side. The indicator lights go out, so the brain knows I have stepped off that side, but the gyro and motor control are still active. This can be very hazardous, as the unit wants to take off when you step off with the other foot.

If I step off the other side first, it disables the motor as soon as the lights go out. Something in the computer brain is not turning off, even though the switch is telling it to.
