The lowest cost modification to make the Dune Buggy go faster is to add a third battery and 36 Volt charger to make the battery pack 36 Volts, and leaving everything else stock. However, nearly everyone on this forum who has tried this has wound up overheating and burning out the motor so it is not a modification that we recommend.

For a reliable modification a larger motor, controller, and battery pack could be installed with the chain running between the motor and jackshaft for improved hill climbing ability. Or a larger motor, controller, and battery pack could be installed with a chain running between the motor and axle for increased speed. Here are the gains earned from these modifications compared to which size motor is installed:

Using the Original Jackshaft:
  • With 500 Watt motor = same speed and 2 times the hill climbing power
  • With 1000 Watt motor = 20% increase in speed and 4 times the hill climbing power.
Deleting the Original Jackshaft (chain goes directly from motor to axle):
  • With 500 Watt motor = 2 times increase in speed and same hill climbing power.
  • With 1000 Watt motor = 2.2 times increase in speed and 2 times the hill climbing power.

We can make new versions of any of these kits if there is something that you would like changed such as larger batteries, faster battery charger, or a different throttle.
