3-Phase Controllers "Speed Cables"

When a controller has a speed cable connector for a speed or "gear" selector switch then if no switch is attached to the connector the controller will default to medium speed.

I'm trying to figure out what the three wires into a socket labeled "Speed Cable" do. Also, if the controller is built to be able to switch between High - Med - Low speeds, what it defaults to if you have nothing wired to the "Speed Cable"...
