motor run/start capacitors???

I have a 24 volt 500 watt 27.6A brushed dc motor being fed a constant ~25 amps from a sabertooth2x25 motor driver. When stopping abruptly my red error led flashes which means overvoltage or overcurrent. I remember seeing many hobby dc motors with capacitors wired in parallel across their leads. Would this help the situation? If so im not sure how to determine what size capacitor I'd need?
I am not sure if using a capacitor would help but it is certainly worth a try. I recommend using a capacitor rated for at least twice the Voltage of the battery pack. The larger the capacitor is the higher the chance are that is that it will help.
